Impact Highlights 2023

Sustainable Open Space for Everyone

Our focus is on results-driven social initiatives that truly make a positive difference in people’s lives. Our work over the past three years has been illuminating, challenging and greatly rewarding. Thank you to all of the golfers, program participants, partners and donors who have joined us on this journey of transforming Corica Park into a sustainable open space for everyone. We are proud to share highlights of the work of the entire Greenway Golf team and its impact on the community.

Snapshot

We created 31,000 hours of shared space use in 2023 through our On the Green initiative, which activates Corica Park’s communal open space for a broad base of inclusive activities, all provided completely free of cost, to youth, adults, schools, non-profits and small businesses.

Space

We are proud to report that we activated almost the entire Corica Park complex, which accounts for 65% of Alameda’s public park land, for our work in 2023. This includes:

300 acres of playable golf course green space for youth programming, nature walks and tournament fundraisers.

5 acres of additional communal meeting and event spaces for a wide variety non-golf, community uses including cultural events, a museum space, educational workshops and other group gatherings.

Looking ahead: plans for 30 acres green spaces on the golf courses that are not used for play are in the planning stages for pollinator habitats, community gardening and other uses.

People

In total we served 2,000+ individual community members and 84 organizations in 2023, including 42 new groups who have never accessed Corica Park for their actvities and work before.

Focusing on our core mission, our participation data reflects the success of our inclusive programming in broadening the benefits of Corica Park’s green space for underserved groups.

MAJOR IMPACT AREAS

  1. REIMAGINING SPACE USE

2. EXPANDING ACCESS

3. CREATING OPPORTUNITY

  1. Reimagining Space Use

for(e) everyone

By rethinking who golf courses are for, we strive to reimagine these spaces as true community hubs for(e) everyone to connect with nature, with recreation, with each other and with new possibilities.

First Time Sightings

Spotted: finish lines alongside clean finishes on the range.

Efforts to raise awareness about this vital community resource for golfers and non-golfers alike and to share communal green space in creative ways have led to many first time sightings at Corica Park, all visible signs of our reimagination. We are thrilled to see so many new faces along with frequent golfers using the space in new ways.

2. Expanding Access

on par

Significant barriers to entry, both financial and cultural, persist in the world of golf. More broadly, green space, critical for physical and mental health, is disproportionally unavailable in underserved communities. By tackling major obstacles to participation, we work to ensure that access to Corica Park’s reimagined space is on par for everyone.

Barrier Breakers and Bridge Builders

Harnessing the strengths of our differences.

Our active community engagment efforts and inclusive programming is designed to remove the many hurdles that limit access to golf and other recreation for so many people so that we can build pathways for broad participation.

3. Creating Opportunity

drive success

Sports and land both have a long history tied to creating opportunity. Combining the two, golf courses can be tremendous springboards for achievement that drive success. Transforming access to Corica Park’s reimagined space into long-term positive outcomes is our ultimate goal for lasting impact.

We are fortunate to have met so many talented individuals through our college prep, workforce development and small business initiatives. They are testament to the power of sport and space to open doors and support financial well-being. Creating opportunities for skill-building, mentorship and income generation by leveraging Corica Park’s 330+ acres of open space is at the core of our efforts to inspire, empower and equip future generations.

Inspire. Empower. Equip.

We’re surrounded by talent!

Community Voices

The smiles behind the numbers tell the story.

While the data is a critical tool in evaulating our progress, community voices provide a tangible measure of our efforts. Everyday, we see the smiles and hear stories from a growing Corica Park community about the fun, friendship, stress relief, physical fitness, confidence-building and purpose people are experiencing first hand, many for the very first time (and much to their surprise) at a golf course. From kids feeling like fish out of water in competitive team sports to teens grappling with social isolation to adults seeking places to bond around common interests, we are all building a culture together where everyone belongs.

  • What I find is that no matter what background you come from, it was a place where everyone felt noticed and appreciated.

Thank you.

Unlocking the potential of Corica Park’s open space requires that the voices of all stakeholders be heard. Our partners include private businesses, public sector entities, mission-aligned non-profits, generous donors and community residents. We could not do this work without the contribution of all of them. We are truly grateful for their support and community spirit.
